Orlando furioso: plot of the third edition (canti I-XIV)

I. Angelica flees from Paris on horseback, she meets Rinaldo on foot, she continues her flight. Pursuits and encounters in the woods II. Duel between Rinaldo and Sacripante, Angelica flees in fear. Bradamante seeks Ruggiero and meets Pinabello who recounts how Ruggiero is the magician’s prisoner. III. Bradamante escapes from a trap set by Pinabello, meets the sorceress Melissa who introduces him to the shadows of the future Este lords and tells her how to free Ruggiero from the castle of the wizard Atlante. IV. Bradamante defeats Atlante and frees Ruggiero who is carried away by the hippogryph. Rinaldo frees Dalinda in Scotland. V. Dalinda tells the story of Ginevra condemned for having slandered Polinesso, her rejected lover. Rinaldo frees Ginevra. VI. Ruggiero arrives at Alcina’s island on the hippogryph’s back, he meets Astolfo transformed into myrtle. VII. Ruggiero is imprisoned by Alcina. The sorceress Melissa reveals Alcina’s falls magic. VIII. Ruggiero destroys Alcina’s spell. Angelica is in flight, she is captured by the inhabitants of Ebuda and is offered to the ogre as food. Orlando has a very troubled dream and begins his amorous  inquiry. IX. Orlando, carried by the wind, reaches Holland, succours Olimpia against Cimosco and frees Brieno. X. Brieno abandons Olimpia. Ruggiero reaches the fortress of the sorceress Logistilla and, on the hippogryph’s back, reaches the West. Rinaldo leads the English in aid of the Franks. Ruggiero frees Angelica. XI. Angelica makes herself invisible thanks to her ring and escapes Ruggiero. He is prisoner in Atlante’s palace. Orlando reaches Ebuda, kills the ogre and frees Olimpia who marries Oberto. XII. In turn Orlando is held prisoner in Atlante’s palace. Angelica frees Orlando and Ferraù from the spell, then escapes to the Orient alone. Orlando comes upon a grotto where Isabella is held prisoner by Gabrina. XIII. Isabella recounts her adventures and is freed by Orlando. Bradamante again meets Melissa, who makes prophecies on the ladies of the House of Este. Bradamante falls upon Atlante’s palace. XIV. Review of the Saracen army. Mandricardo abducts Doralice, betrothed to Rodomonte. The archangel Michael seeks Discord so as to thrust her upon the Saracens. These in the meantime attack Paris.
