Orlando furioso: plot of the third edition (canti XV-XXIV)
XV. Astolfo is freed from Alcina’s spell and travels to the West. In Egypt he slays the monsters Caligorante and Orrilo. He meets Grifone, Aquilante and Sansonetto. XVI. Origille deceives Grifone. Rodomonte is in Paris. Rinaldo and Zerbino appear. XVII. Grifone’s adventures in Syria. The story of Norandino and his wife Lucina imprisoned by an ogre. XVIII. Grifone’s prowess. Rodomonte retreats from Paris. Discord takes over the pagans’ camp. Marfisa is in Syria and suffers misadventures with Sansonetto, Astolfo, Grifone, and Aquilante. Rinaldo kills Dardinello in battle near Paris. Cloridano and Medoro try to recover Dardinello’s body at night. XIX. Zerbino intervenes and Cloridano dies. Medoro is wounded and looked after by Angelica. Together they leave for the Orient. New adventures for Marfisa who reaches, with companions, the land of murderous females, where they meet Guidon Selvaggio. XX. Guidon Selvaggio tells the tale of Orontea and the murderous females. Marfisa and companions engage in battle with the murderous females. With Guidon Selvaggio and without Astolfo they reach France. Marfisa takes Gabrina and has her brought to Zerbino, after having beaten him in a duel. XXI. Emonide tells Zerbino the story of Gabrina. XXII. Astolfo returns to the West autonomously. He destroys Atlante’s palace and takes possession of the Hippogryph. Ruggiero and Bradamante, once freed from magic, are together. Bradamante kills Pinabello. XXIII. Rodomonte takes possession of the horse Rabicano. Gabrina accuses Zerbino of the murder of Pinabello. Orlando frees Zerbino from the Maganzesi and has him rejoined to Isabella. Orlando has a clash with Mandricardo. Orlando finds himself in the place that hosted the love affair between Angelica and Medoro and looses his mind. XXIV. Zerbino and Isabella find the signs of Orlando’s folly. Zerbino duels with Mandricardo and dies. Mandricardo battles with Rodomonte. There follows a truce.
