Orlando furioso: plot of the third edition (canti XXV-XXXV)
XXV. Ruggiero saves Ricciardetto, condemned to death, who tells him about his story with Fiordispina. He decides to go to the pagan camp. XXVI. Ruggiero pursues Rodomonte; Ruggiero, Marfisa, Rodomonte, Mandricardo, Doralice and others start a brawl. Mandricardo and Rodomonte pursue Doralice, who has magically disappeared. XXVII. Rinaldo leaves Paris. Mandricardo, Marfisa, Rodomonte, and Ruggiero are in the pagan camp. Discord intervenes again. Doralice chooses Mandricardo. Rodomonte abandons the camp in a fury. XXVIII. An innkeeper tells Rodomonte the novella about Astolfo and Fiammetta. Rodomonte goes to a high spot near Avignon. Isabella reaches him there. Rodomonte falls in love with Isabella. XXIX. Isabella chooses to die rather than betray Zerbino. On her tomb Rodomonte builds a mausoleum. He challenges all those who cross a bridge. Scenes of Orlando’s folly who kills Angelica’s mare. XXX. The demented Orlando’s peregrinations. Clash between Ruggiero and Mandricardo. The first is wounded and the second killed. Bradamante is paned because Ruggiero is away, she receives news from Ippalca. XXXI. Clash between Guidon Selvaggio and Rinaldo. Near Paris they meet Fiordiligi, who tells them about Orlando’s folly. Fiordiligi and Bradamante meet again. At the bridge guarded by Rodomonte Brandimarte is captured. XXXII. Grief and lament of Brandimarte who thinks he has been abandoned. Decides to go to Paris. Meets Ullania and the three kings with the shield of the queen of the Lost Island. They go to Tristano’s fortress. XXXIII. In the fortress the wars of the French in Italy are described. The three kings are defeated by Bradamante. Fight between Rinaldo and Gradasso. The latter takes possession of the horse Baiardo. Astolfo on the back of the hippogryph arrives in Ethiopia. XXXIV. Astolfo decends to hell, then he rises to earthly Paradise and to the moon, where, in a great valley where are gathered all the things lost by men, he finds Orlando’s sanity. XXXV. Astolfo visits the palace of time and glory. Bradamante defeats Rodomonte, who leaves Isabella’s tomb.
